Stanton Moore’s SMDA Lessons – #2 – New Applications of the Steve Gadd Mozambique

Hello! and welcome to the second lesson on mikedolbear.com from my Stanton Moore Drum Academy! Over the next few months we’ll look at different topics to give you an idea of what you can find over at SMDA.

This is a well-known groove that Steve Gadd has played and utilized in many different ways.  In this lesson, I want to examine not only how he has done it, but some variations on it that I have found to be super useful.  We’ll first look at it in the most straightforward way.

When I first started trying to learn this groove it was a challenge for me to remember it.  After a while I started to make realisations about it that helped me internalize it and remember it more easily.  I realized that it is essentially a sticking.  We’ll examine that sticking and how it relates to other stickings you might already know.

From there we’ll examine some fun variations that I’ve come up with as well.

The video has the notation on the screen so lets get to it!
