A local business has my landline number on the internet and on its bloody shopfront. I think it's closed down and I got given the number. I've had a couple of calls this year about it. What do I do about that?

Some paint on an extendable roller, perhaps?

I need the landline as the mobile reception in the house is quite bad. Pain in the arse. Anyway. I went round to the shop to see what was going on, and it looks shut down, although it looks fine on google streetview. So I looked it up on companies house and it's dissolved - phoned up 192.com and told them that, so they've removed the listing, and then I phoned the company that provided them with the data and they've promised to remove the listing as well. Sorted out remarkably quickly with real humans on the phones. Excellent.

So now I need to go and deface the shop. Or burn it down.

I feel your pain - Yellow pages once put my last company's main phone number against a local electricians by mistake - we would get loads of calls asking us to come and fit cookers, ovens and fueboxes etc.

We could do nothing as the edition of yellow pages was in circulation, and being a business it was not possible to block / screen calls.

Best of luck !

I sporadically get calls on my business line from people trying to spend Groupon vouchers - very annoying but seems one of the numbers they use is identical to mine, except is has an '8' and mine has a '0'. Or some people just can't read!

I had the same - when Orange set up my landline, they gave me a number that used to belong to a plumbers business in town. We had calls more or less every day to complain about shoddy work etc, even got some abuse from one woman when I said that I'm not a plumber, it's a residential line.

So anyway I called Orange and they weren't very helpful, so we just unplugged the phone. We didn't really use the landline anyway. This probably won't help you a great deal of course, but I share your pain.

Our home phone number used to be a fax number for a business who received lots of stuff during the night. It was dreadful for several months but after talking to BT, they managed to block most of the calls. Its a nuisance. Get yourself a phone which gives you call screening and only answer the numbers you recognise. Let the others to to a voicemail message telling the general populace that it is now a private number and f**k off.

Alternatively, ask for another number and give your reason.
