Can anyone explain which way up a China is supposed to be mounted? I have seen some mounted bell up like a crash and some mounted bell down.
Does it make a difference to the sound?
Are there any cons in mounting it one way or t'other?

Thanks!

I mount my Diamondback china bell up, the others are bell down when I use them.

It depends on the situation to be honest.

When I play jazz & big band stuff I tend to have them bell up, hanging loose sometimes with a sizzler attached to get the swish knocker sound but when I play funk it gets mounted bell down and screwed quite securely to get a trashier sound.

traditionally they were mounted bell up but then they were often played more like ride cymbals like the zildjian swish cymbals and the village vanguard cymbal. The 'ROCK' guys flipped round the other way and starting beating the hell out of em ;)here are some vids.....

I have never managed to get the same resonance mounting bell down -which I agree is the better orientation. So I mount bell up, purely for the sound.

As Prog said, I will add that mount it inverted you can "shoulder" the stick on the curve of the flange which IMHO gives a better sound.

Bell up will knacker sticks, and possibly the cymbal, more easily if crashing but is better for riding.
