Posted - 17/07/2012 : 04:36:58 Sometimes very technical players seem to string together well rehearsed patterns, fills, etc--and it sounds like it. Even some players I really greatly respect have this sound. Not here. But I'm sure it's all practiced extensively. This looks like fun! (I know it's 'overplaying'--and over the top--but that's what this gig is!)

Posted - 19/07/2012 : 09:46:19 I'm a big fan of Omar after first seeing him on BBC Rock School when I was a kid, he was a bit of a regular on that program and I'll never forget about when he played to a click, just inspiring, I was in awe. But I have to say that this performance didn't really do it for me. I agree with others that he was a bit heavy handed and he's dress and sound seemed at odds with the big band. It seemed more like a progrock drummer playing along to a big band track and doing whatever he wanted to it, I didn't think it complemented the music massively. |

Not at all!! i know he played with everyone! from Sting to Wayne Shorter... as Weckl and Colaiuta did too.. but young players never talk about him.. this is the first post i see! it's funny.. even more funny the fact that he is in my opinion more musical than the other 90's technical giants... |

Posted - 17/07/2012 : 10:39:31 OK so I don't really know feck all about playing in a big band but for me Omar seems to do a better job on this clip than a lot of others.
As to Omar being under rated, I thought he was held in very high regard? He certainly is by me! Saw him a couple of times with his trio in the last 3 years and he was utterly brilliant; totally enjoying the music, playing with complete freedom and joy. The Sting live double album Omar played on is still one of my faves from his older work. The rest of the band is superb too, including the beautiful Kenny Kirkland (RIP) |

Posted - 17/07/2012 : 07:46:34 I feel OmaR IS ON OF THE MOST UNDERRATED DRUMMERS OF ALL TIME... but rather than this performance i really enjoyed his solo at the buddy rich festival, he is a little heavy for a big band type of sound. |

Posted - 17/07/2012 : 06:16:24 I enjoyed that, but found Omar to be a little heavy handed! And did nobody tell him about the DJ dresscode? |
