I started recording a song on an ancient and delapidated tape recorder about eight years ago, then soon after I started going with Squeak she lent me a Portastudio and I did a new version on that, drum machine, synth, ukulele and vocals, but could do no more than get it to very rough demo level.

Then I bought half decent pc gear about 3-4 years ago and recorded the Porta tracks on to that and used it as the frame to build the song onto, not intended as the final song, just figuring out the parts.

Worked on it as well as lots of others, but could never really get it right, and then things started going odd, tracks, disappeared, sound broke up, could not edit tracks etc., but by that time I doubted I would ever be able to recreate what I had managed to record which was starting to get close to what I wanted. Over two years I managed to restore some missing files, and others re-appeared when I turned the pc off and on again. I am not great on computers and virtually sweated bollix getting it sorted.

Finally I had a quiet week end, brought in my friend to do a blistering guitar solo on the final chorus. I was very keen that he left 3 gaps at the start of the first and third lines of the chorus, and he thought this was really bad, but when he heard the mix he loved it, and wants me to produce his CD. To complete the song I added a crescendo cymbal roll and very quiet bell sounds on the fade-out, and at 8.30 pm yesterday I mixed it and finished it, the relief and exhaustion was incredible.

It has huge flaws, partly due to my having to stitch various out-takes together to complete some missing tracks, and oddly the original Portastudio tracks never returned, but they served their function and are not needed now.

It's over 8 minutes of pretentious Prog/Trance, but I am SO chuffed!

A great week end's work, I also recorded a ukulele solo track, mixed a couple of others, and now only need to a add trumpet and/or trombone to the middle 8 of one song, then my 3rd CD will be complete...about 6 months sooner than expected.

During this Titanic struggle a number of people here have helped me with good advice when things have gone all brooke-bond-divi-apeshirt, so big thanks to all!

Ooo, new music I hear? What is this?
Captain Bubble Posted - 21/05/2012 : 17:47:08
Well I have now completed it and officially released it. My previous two were much simpler and more focussed on songs and ukuleles, but my seriously ill godfather said he wanted to hear a bit more drumming, so I gave the drums a bit more prominence on this one while there is still time. It's called "Professor Argentina Bhutt-Phlapp and the Electric Lemonade", the title track being a duet for drum kit and ocarina, no less! 3 songs, 2 instrumentals. Will have some copies at NDF.

When do we get to hear "Puke"?
Captain Bubble Posted - 19/03/2012 : 19:12:17
Puke, like it!

Yes, Uke Prog, or Prog Uke, or just Puke for short.
Only kidding :-)
Using instruments in unusual ways always appeals to me.

Cheers Squires. Ukulele Prog, like it!
Actually the uke I used on this song is a Risa solid electric soprano, fed through a Roland Micro-Cube and given a little EQ and reverb, and it sounds a bit like a blend of electric guitar and church bells, partly due to the unusual chords. My friend used a Casio Midi Guitar and Boss GT6 effects pedal for the lead, and we went for a David Gilmore feel on it, but if he was more familiar with uke tuning I would have got him to use one!.

Ukulele prog? I think you've created a whole new genre :-)
