Posted - 09/06/2012 : 12:21:30 I was in Norwich on Wednesday and popped into PMT as I know they have a Roland Planet. I had a go on a TD30 whilst I was in there (the cheaper model with the older pads/cymbals, not the full flagship) and I was very impressed with the new module. I'm not raving about the sounds enough to ditch my DTXtreme III (which I still prefer, sound-wise) but I have to say, the dynamic response was better that my Yamaha. I could literally play the subtlest of notes on the TD30 and they were picked up by the module. I'm not saying the Yamaha doesn't pick up extremely subtle notes (it does) but in terms of subtlety and dynamics, I felt that the TD30 was closer to an acoustic kit. Buzz rolls were a joy!
I was also impressed by the Roland rep who was very informative. I didn't catch his name but he was lovely and talked me through the wealth of editing and sound-shaping features present in the module. He also let me play to my heart's content, trying out loads of different kits etc.
It's amazing just how good electric kits are these days. If I was choosing between my Yamaha and the Roland now and was mainly using sample libraries on a computer, the TD30 would be my kit of choice, I think.

I noticed this when I used one on Oliver. It's almost as if the brain quickly realizes that with that many quick strokes you're trying to do a buzz roll and alters the sound accordingly to make a smoooooth buzz! The same with cymbal swells. As soon as you start rolling the sound turns into a lovely swiiiiiiiiiiiish! Loved playing it! |

Posted - 09/06/2012 : 18:36:13 I'm quite intrigued by the new Roland brain and - as with Prog - see how it racks up against a 2Box... |
