Hi All,

I managed to bag a pdp mxr kit this week and there are quite a few knocks on the bd where the emo kids had the tom so low. http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/300639535553?ssPageName=STRK:MEWAX:IT&_trksid=p3984.m1423.l2649

Any thoughts on how to cover or mask the scrapes? I've uploaded an image here - https://picasaweb.google.com/115956367218649446548/PdpBassDrumMarks#

the colour is supposed to be ebony matt black but its more of a dark grey.

I'm not looking to toally cover the scrapes but rather make them less noticable. It's going to be a house kit so it'll get a beating anyway but if I can make it look a little better i will.

I originally thought of boot polish or maybe felt tip pens but I'd be interested in anyone elses ideas...

Cheers

I would suggest getting some thin oil based dye (so the grain won't raise) and applying to the area. It shouldn't stick where it's been laqcuered, but should stick to the open wood.

Test out of spare wood to get the colour right. Go lighter, you can always add more coats.

Try and black, but of course thin out with thinners.

Can I ask what the Meinls are like??

TMBG fan?

Thanks, I'll try the dye I think as there is an art shop local to me. Should've thought of that really!

Not TMBG, Automatic Dlamini - http://www.bristolarchiverecords.com/bands/Automatic_Dlamini.html. Their first album was 'The D is for Drum', which was kind of pretentious even for the 80's but they're the first local band that made me want to get out and gig.

Cheers

oh, the Meinls are interesting but a little damaged :-( The top has a half inch crack on the edge and there is a hole in the bottom cymbal but this appears to be intentional as its very well drilled and mid-way between the edge and the bell.

That hole is meant to be there - early meinl vent.

I'd recommend trying it out on a similar wood first - and also maybe the underside of the bass drum just to check it won't damage the regular finish.

I got the kit plus a couple of stands and the cymbals for £275. I always intended to sell the cymbals, and the hardware & most skins are in pretty decent condition so I reckon if I sell the bits I don't need I'll have a respectable maple kit for £200.

Having tuned the kit and played it for a few hours last week, I like it so much that I may even keep it for myself and let the club night use an old mapex m birch kit I have as a spare. Amazing what a decent snare head and a drum dial can do!
