So I've just recently sold my TD-8, and wondered to myself how cheaply I could replace it with something home made.
So I've decided to embark on a bit of a DIY project. I've purchased to some new Mapex Tornado toms, 2x12" and 1x13", as my donor drums. These were an amzing bargain at £17 each, from Rockem. And my first job has been to strip them bare and decide where I'm going to cut them.
I was thinking 4x12" for the toms and the snare, and them cobbling some kind of 13" for the bass drum. not sure how I'm going to mount the bass drum yet though.
I've ordered some foam cones and piezo's from ebay in Canada, seems to be the only place I can track some down. Roland UK stock a very limited quantity, only 2. So it's going to be a long wait for them to turn up!!
I'll post pics as I progress. |

Looking good so far Bewdy!! For it being done 'on the cheap' it looks pretty tidy so far, and will be interesting to see it progress. As for the wrap, it's a shame you didn't remove it before cutting, you should be able to get some 'channel' rubber but I'm not sure where, especially wide enough to sit over the width of the shell.
Otherwise.... just tidy the bottom of each shell with sandpaper or file so it's smooth. And run a piece of black electrical tape around the bottom 1cm of the shell, covering the damaged wrap. Might not sound pretty but the wrap's black anyway, and if you do it on all the shells it'll look like it's supposed to be there. And hey, it's cheap! |

| Thanks for those links. I've ordered some samples from a Thames company but that ET1848 looks very close, I'd prefer a thinner material though, as I don't want a big lip at the bottom of the drum where the edging laps over. I saw some camper van edging on eBay which looked close too but I'll wait ad see what these samples are like first. |

Cool thread! Sorry been on holiday.
This is something I am also considering myself, as playing a full kit at home is almost impossible...

For the rims I got an old guitar lead and cut it lengthwise. Then opened it up and put it round the rim, double taping both ends..

Got my Piezo's and cones from Canada today... amazingly quite delivery. Just need a trip to maplin now for my TRS sockets then I'm in business. https://skydrive.live.com/redir.aspx?cid=90efa2ee6970e8a6&resid=90EFA2EE6970E8A6!479&parid=90EFA2EE6970E8A6!467
Si I've just opened up a Pd-85 to have a butchers at where they have mounted the peizos and cone height and I was a bit surprised to see that the cone is flush with the rim of the drum (most of the DIY builders suggest raising the cone up a 1/8inch above the bearing edge) but also the rim sensor was tucked directly underneath the main piezo?? How on earth are the piezo's isolating from each other as there doesn't appear to be any form of isolation mount other than the cone itself?? I'm surprised that the two pick ups are able to operate independently of each other!
Any experienced edrum builders want to comment on the cone height/placement? I have the materials to make an adjustable mount for the cone (bolts and a support bracket) but I'd much rather have a neater single cross bridge without all the extra stuff to go wrong or come loose. |

Just thought I'd post some updates on this, as I'm almost near completion. I changed my mind on the mounting. I was originally going to have a fixed cross bar but instead opted for a mounting platform which I could adjust on the advise of others. So I made a little mount from some various sized washers from B&Q. https://skydrive.live.com/redir?resid=90EFA2EE6970E8A6!548
And because of the limited space inside the drum, I had to resort to using metal L brackets to attach the cross bars. On one side I used the lug bolt and on the other I had to use the shortest screws I could get me hands on, which were unfortunately still a little too long, so you can see a slight ding on the wrap, hardly noticeable though.

Once that was sorted, I decided to paint the inside of the drum black so the insides were less visible and put the mount together with the trigger cone.

finally, I glued the bottom trim on and and wired up the socket. Jey presto! a finished drum.

Now for the moment of truth. I plugged it in and wow, it works straight away every bit as good as my older PD-120. Now for three more.

I failed to mention that I put additional piezos on the inner shell using some foam sided tape to get the rim shot sound, using a wiring diagram I found from the V-drums forum.
And the rest of them mounted.

The only thing I have left to do is to find a way of mounting my 13" bass drum. I was wondering about sticking another tom holder on it and attaching it to the rack somehow, as I've always had problems with my elecky bass drum creeping. Anyway, that's a problem for another day. |

Excellent work Bewdy! I like the attention to detail with painting the interior parts and shells black, makes it look a little less 'home made' and also using additional piezos for dual zones. Well thought out and well executed project! |

No not yet, I'm still trying to think of ways to mount the shell which will look nice and also minimize the bass drum creeping. As both my roland pads have done this and it's very annoying.
Regarding the bottom lugs and hoops, the depth of the shell was dictated by cutting the shell in half, but besides I wanted to keep the costs down, and this way I could use two donor drums for 4 triggers without forking out for additional lugs, hoops and heads, this would really put the price up at no other benefit than a slight aesthetic one (as I don't plan on reversing this kit any time). But i think the rubber trim finishes of the drums really nicely at the bottom anyway. |
