Before I start, I know nothing about recording! Our guitarist has just acquired a studio recording program for his laptop with the aim of us getting some rough versions of tracks down at rehearsal. The room has a PA with 6 mic inputs and I can get hold of mics from the studio. How can I get my drum tracks out of the PA into the laptop.  |

Are you willing to spend more?
If not, then run a stereo line out from the mixer into the line input of the laptop.
BUT, this means all of your recorded drums will appear on 2 channels (L&R), and you won't be able to individually process the channels/mics, just the stereo line output all together. (If that makes any sense?!)
If you want all of the different mic's/channels showing up individually in the 'recording program' you will need an audio interface that will record multi-track. And to get one that will record from about 8mic inputs you are looking at £250+

Might be worth getting a 2 channel interface if you can't afford something with multiple channels, as the line input on the laptop (assuming you have one, small headphone sized input for computer mics and such), don't sound to great at all.
With a cheap USB stereo audio interface/mixer (bout £30 second hand) you could just about get away with 6 channels if you only have one singer. E.g. two mics for drums (recorderman technique, google can explain), 2 guitar, one bass and one vox. Run all them into the desk, then the outputs probably labeled 'main outs' on the desk, into the little USB interface, which will convert it to digital for your laptop to record, whilst avoiding the noisy rubbish little mic input on the laptop!

| My old band re-released all our recordings as an album package containing both "studio" recorded material and stuff we tracked ourselves in our practice room. Oddly enough the practice room stuff came out sounding best! |
