I saw them at Hammersmith Odeon just before they went pop/soul and blew it. Cannot remember what drums he used then, possibly Ludwig. Joe Sample started things with an extended solo piano piece, then the whole band came in. Superb gig, highlight was Pops Popwell's long and super-funky bass solo, the bass almost horizontal on top of his belly, and a grin like a Cheshire Cat.
keep an eye out, that film is on Sky Arts quite often, the Premier kit is used for every band except James Brown. In fact there's a clip of a rehearsal with the factory tags are still attached to it. *where's my anorak*
