Hi, having issues finding my sound. I have settled on my ride cymbal which is a Paiste sound creation 20 dry ride. I'm 90% certain of my paiste sig full 16 crash, an gonna pair it with an 18 full or 17fast sig. but What I'm not certain of is the hats to use?
I have just bought some aax stage hats as I wanted a louder brighter sound to my new beats (which I still have). But I think I prefere the new beats as they have a better groove, an go better with the songs I play. Its funny as on there own I prefere the aax's!
As my crash and ride is paiste I think I should get a paiste hat to suit. Any one got any ideas?
I have a set of stage aax cymbals 14 hats 16, 18 an 20 ride, but only like the hats.

If you are a successful drummer with a cymbal endorsement contract you have to use the make of cymbals you endorse. Most of us are free to use whichever company's cymbal which sounds good and fits nicely with your set up. Forget about the make, choose the cymbals you like. My cymbal collection includes Matt Nolan, proper Turkish K Zildjian, Avedis Zildjian, Paiste, Stagg, Sabian and Ufip, and even some old modified Kruts, Zyns and Pearls. They all have a place.

I know what you mean. there is something satisfying about a matched set all from the same company... the same logo etc. I have to say, I'm lucky that zildjian make a lot of the sounds I like... and I'm nearly there with the setup I have always wanted... but I still mix and match.
newbeats, infact A zildjians in general are great in the mix but bland on their own... I would have thought you would get closest to the newbearts with 2002 mediums Giant beats or the new 602's... but I aint no paiste expert.

The most truly interesting drummers I have ever seen have always had a mix of cymbal brands (even if, in some cases, only behind closed doors). Don't be a slave to marketing. If you like the New Beats, stick with them. Be an individual.

I do like the new beats, but just think I need something a little brighter an louder, but that is not the aax stage hats. been reading a lot at paiste 602 an giant beats but just not sure what they sound like as I cant get to a paiste shop easily an the sound samples on the net aren't what you hear with your ears. I found the aax crashes like dustnin lids compared to the paiste signatures.
Or... I could mic the hars up

Ibadan new beats and have just replaced them with 2002 medium hats - they are what you are looking for as in brighter and louder. A big recommend from me!!

The Sigs/Giant-beats won't be as loud as the New Beats - I doubt that 2002 Mediums would be louder either, you'd need the Sound-Edge version for more volume/cut, but they sound like Sound-Edges, not like New Beats (funnily enough...). It sounds to me that what you're really looking for is a slightly heavier version of exactly what you've got - keep an eye out for a pair of Avedis Rock hats.

I'm no expert on them but if you want cymbals that sound like your New Beats but with a bit more cut and thrust, I'd be inclined to audition a pair of Quick Beats.

Eh braders, just a thought; why do you need louder hats? If there is one part of the kit that is often too loud with a lot of drummers it is the hats. I would not describe Newbeats as particularly quiet. You sure you need more hat volume?

2002 Heavy hats are great in the cut dept. Although if the above mention Avedis Rock hats float your boat gimme a shout...esp hollow logo ones

Ludwig, Rogers, HipGig. Too many snare drums. Lots of K's. Endorsee for Protection Racket, KickPort and De La Cruz Custom Drumkeys.

My crashes are what's loud in my set up. I have a premiere genista with premier 2000 snare. I think that where our practice venue is only 20ftx30ft an low ceilings the crashes are always overpowering. Gona go try some papists sig medium hats on sat see what there like, but being drawn to the 2002 hats also.

My 2002s are early red label ones - can't remember the year. A very good purchase from Mr Prog!!

Probably not quite as bright as brand new ones but perfect for what I was looking for

Hi all, been out an tried some 2002 medium hats, signature sound edges, avedis fast hats , AA medium hats an by chance some paiste sound formula reflector medium heavy hats. Liked all the hats! and couldn't choose until I tried the sound formulas, they just sound like the sound I had in my head, bright cutting but nice slosh.
Cheers for help everyone, job done move on to next crash cymbal purchase!

I have a massive collection of hi hats. Some going by the logo should be pants, some should be the best money can buy. I very rarely play a matching pair. Todays weapon of choice is a 602 top with a 505 soundedge bottom. I have even experimented with a cut down (to 14" as it was very damaged) 2002 flat ride as a bottom and a 5 Star super zyn top. Try doing a bit of mix and marching, it's great fun and you learn loads about weight and sound. Look out for single hats with broken friends, cheap as chips!! Throw out that rule book, you're a drummer!!!

Would like to see what a 602 top hat would sound like on top or a sound edge bottom or even a dark bottom. See what eBay has to offer.

There is a blue label 602 medium top on ebay. Only on £62 at the moment, it was with a kit a couple of weeks ago but that sale fell through. worth a look

I can't see why not, Tops are rare as they always seem to break first, finding a matching bottom wouldn't be too hard and would turn it into an investment. I spoke to one of the QA guys at Paiste last week who said they still work from the same B20 alloy recipe and master off the same control cymbal for the newer reissue 602s (blue label) so you could match it up with an older bottom. If you want more volume rather than tone go for a B8 instead of the B20. 2002 and 505 etc
