| A terrific interview and a great story Nigel. I too saw Joe Morello at Birmingham Town Hall, but it was about 1967. I had just purchased my first drum kit and I considered myself to being one of the world's top drummers. Oh dear, what a shock! I was very close to JM and seeing someone at close quarters that could really play like that was a sobering experience. I went home and considered buying a Strat. After all, in the space of two hours I went from World's best drummer to a complete drumming idiot. Nigel, we must meet up again and go and watch some bands like we said we would. |

I think most of us on here can relate at least to some parts to Nigels story. However, if, like me, you're an older drummer and find yourself worried about arthritis, weight gain, chloresterol etc it makes one realize just how lucky most of us are compared to others like Nigel.Rivetting read, and inspiring and hearwarming in equal measures. Keep playing as much as you can Nigel cos' as you realize, drumming and music are a life-force all of their own.
Living not far away I remember George Clay's well, and The Railway. I also remember Buddy Rich at the old Talk of the Midlands c. '78. |

I always enjoy reading these articles as I have not had the pleasure of meeting any Dolbearians as yet but something really resonated in this one, aside from the frank and unselfconcious way Nigel speaks of his health problems the way he maps out his early experiences with bands venues and equipment just remind me of how it felt to be at an age when not making it in the pro music world seemed immpossible.
Like Nigel and I suspect a good few more on this forum I never did hit the big time and spent a lifetime playing in pubs and clubs and anywhere they would have me, but it was all a lot more fun than I appreciated at the time.
I wish you well Nigel, you write with refreshing honesty, I hope you find that elusive Luddy kit and enjoy it to the full. |

Thats why we do this feature because you guys and girls all have great stories to tell.
95% of drummers are hobbyist and keep the industry going and I always feel are the real success stories as you do it because you love it which is what music is all about.

| Oh it was great thanks. My wife commented for the first time ever that the kit looked and sounded really good. The hardware (rail mount and fold out spurs) stood up to it as well. Just excellent. |
