| Really sorry I had to look away (because of the stick tricks). I really dont do stick tricks. Your drumming sounded alright and what I heard it stayed in time. But pleeease stop the stick tricks!! (you obviously should ignor me and keep doing it if you enjoy it!) |

I think that's kind of the point of gigging tbh. Showing off. I like stick tricks for this reason. Anyone can stay in (cheaply) and enjoy music perfectly recorded on a CD or bought or a few pence off Itunes. People go to gigs to be entertained, and part of that is stick tricks - especially when the stick is dropped mid trick... |

Exactly what jkdrummerdude said its like a part of showmanship i am sure people would love seeing a person playing a 4/4 rock beat while he is doing tricks rather then a drummer just playing the 4/4 beat

You're in SHOW business. So SHOW! I started (very basic) stick tricks to stop myself playing so busy. While your doing nothing give the audience something to look at. A little goes a long way and shows you care. The second-hand spandex suit is a little baggy these days though. :) |
Sitting on top of the mountain isn't the most interesting bit of the climb. Sitting at the bottom aint much fun either. |

| If you can do stick tricks then do them i say but back to the topic i liked the drum cover but i thought it could have been a bit more in keeping with the drum n bass theme, your take was more rock with a disco feel but hey, i still liked it and who am i to talk i cant do half the stuff you did |

bit harsh that!
Mukund Some good solid playing there. I felt it lacked in general feel and groove, but these things come with practice. Stick tricks are great, but I'd say you don't need to do them all the time throughout your playing. The novelty tends to wear off otherwise. |

So this is what this forum is coming to, is it? We get a young, new contributor...proud of something he's made...and he get's this? Really?? I'm all for constructive criticism, but come on. It's beginner level gear recorded in a bedroom. Hardly Abbey Road!! I'm well aware stick tricks are a "marmite" thing, and I'm not a fan of it in general. It has however been a part of drumming for far longer than I have, and Gerry Brown's/Sonny Emory's/Steve Smith's etc careers don't seem to have suffered unduly. I'd love to hear why you "just don't like him", though... |

The metaphorical barbecue is used when someone sees an inflammatory situation that can possibly get out of control. Usually when someone posts something such as this, the protagonists get the hint and take a step back; sometimes they don't however and there have been some monumental online spats between members.
As for the stick tricks; like anything they can be overdone and once this happens they lose any visial 'wow' factor and become annoying for everyone.
Our job, at the end of the day, is to keep time: But I am all for adding some showmanship when possible.

Hi Mukund
Most important thing is not if or if not people like this video you had the balls to put it up on a public forum and ask for some views. Music is subjective which makes it so great so what some people like other dont but as drummers we have to have confidence in ourselfs and what we do. So good on you for posting. I am not a big fan of stick tricks but thats because I cant do them |

Stick tricks,to me at least, are fine if your in a/mahoosive stadium or b/playing hair metal in the 80's.Some people who do them tend to over-do them a little i think and like everything, should be used in moderation.I went to see a gig the other week and the drummer was ok-ish but after watching stick tricks every 5 seconds for the first half an hour of their set i grew bored (and a little embarrassed for him tbh).Im probably just bitter cause i can only spin the stick in my right hand and more often than not drop it anyway haha. Its just not for me. Keep up the hard work Mukund. You are always going to get nay-sayers no matter how accomplished you become but take it on the chin, move on and just keep enjoying the drums! |

Yeah! First time I saw Robin I was like "what on earth is going on here?" and just did not get it. Second time I was totally sold. His showmanship is just amazing and his playing totally rocks. I guess showmanship is like anything else. It can be done well and it can be done badly. |

Hi Mukund, good on you for posting something you've worked on. Sorry you got flamed by some parties as a result. I like stick tricks in context, I'd use some if the circumstances where just right, (maybe in an ironic sense??) All I will say is that mostly when I've got the time to spend an hour or so practising and the choice is between improving my playing or learning a trick,- I feel it's much more important to concentrate on the playing. (some may say it hasn't worked! ) If people have the time to do both, (or even better, -when away from the kit) then why not!! thanks for contributing, - it's given us all something else to discuss which is always a good thing.

| I don't do stick tricks, mainly because I never have time to practice any as I'm too busy playing, but that doesn't mean nobody should. I doubly applaud you because you had the guts to post a video of you playing and open yourself for criticism, and for getting those tricks in. We all have different styles and different tastes, it would be a sad world if we were all the same. Ignore the detractors. |

Thank you everyone i am feeling so honored that such awesome members like you appreciated my video :) and stick tricks just add to showmanship and as i mentioned before while a drummer is playing the same beat,a little tricks can add a little excitement. Someone above said for some sources to stick tricks-I recommend steve stockmal's spinology and chip ritters tricks and also recommend you looking at thomas lang and his stick tricks and also luke holland on youtube :) |

Blimey Mukund, you've stirred up some quite strong opinions with this thread! The important thing is that the 'drumnastics' should not compromise the standard of your playing. My advice is to achieve the highest standard you can (i.e. get a good teacher, develop your own natural (normal!) style of playing and then, and only then, bring in your own bit of showmanship as and when it's appropriate. If you've never seen the late great Eric Delaney performing you have missed out on seeing one of the best 'showman' drummers. Never mind stick twiddling he had a stage full of every drum and tuned percussion instrument imagineable (including a double bass drum kit and timps etc.) and he would play the lot during his show, including timps played with brushes! BUT, and here's the important bit, first and foremost he was a very versatile drummer who knew his craft, but yes, he was a bit of a show off! RIP Eric. |

knockermalin has hit the nail on the head - tricks shouldn't get in the way of your playing.
On the whole, Mukund, I think you incorporated the tricks well enough that playing didn't suffer - again this is something that you can experiment with to figure out what tricks work with what grooves.
I can't do stick tricks and i wouldn't enjoy seeing a drummer do them at a singer-songwriter gig but in the right context etc...
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4Lwp2oeV9yo
Love him or hate him - Mr Lang shows some tricks and how important it is to do the trick in time. Hopefully you'll find this vid useful if you haven't seen it already.

Mukund, I loved it and I love stick tricks as well.
As you love your right hand so much why not try open handed drumming this way you can keep the groove on the hats whilst offering magic with your right hand.
My best ever trick was ordering a pizza whilst keeping the groove going with just my left hand.

As for stick tricks, I love watchingClem Burke, what a showman
As for me, I do the occassional twirl, but use it as a timing mechanism in certain numbers.
If you enjoy them and it doesn't screw up your playing then feck the buggers and carry on twiddling |

Hi Mukund,
For what it's worth I was expecting a full on overload of stick twirling after reading some of the comments already made, but to be honest I thought the amount on show was fairly on the money. There might possibly still be too much if you spent a whole gig doing this, but then again maybe not as it's all down to opinion & personal taste. And after all this is a showcase video so for all any of us know you might be doing a higher volume of tricks to show your ability for the camera &/or treating it as practice so really going for it to get your abilities sharpened & your practice in. Whatever the answer I say good on you & keep it up.
Cheerio, Mark W. |

You don't have to justify your comments to me, but out of sheer curiosity, were your comments made in jest or were they your true thoughts on the matter?

Unfortunately i think bum has made his bed and will have to sleep in it, the apology IMO is enough, i think the explanation is unnecessary and may cause more upset. If he wishes to give a explanation it should be direct to the OP
I get the feeling people will deal with him a little differently from now on so its been a losing situation, just my opinion though

Good effort Makund. It does take balls to post your videos and sounds here, I've never had the confidence enough to do it. Constructively, a bit too many tricks for my liking. That's just my opinion. I don't do tricks. Mostly because I can't. Mostly because I haven't practiced. But I'd love to be able to do that really popular one, whereby when you have a disco hats groove going on and you spin a stick every other time. Where do you think would be a good place for me to start? Links? Videos? Anyways, keep it up fella - it's your thing! |

| Wish I could do more than the odd twirl, only regular bit if stick twiddling in my arsenal is the old left hand matched to trad spin and back, you'd think I could do more being in an 80's tribute but I've tried and my sausage fingers just won't play ball, respect to those that can just don't over do it. |

STICK TRICKS When i first started going drum lessons years ago i did a song with stick tricks in it to show off to the teacher. He said play the song with the tricks then play it without the tricks the one that sounds the best is the one you should do.

If you're in the studio then yes. If you're live on stage putting on a show then perhaps not..! |

Its a shame all the commotion has detracted from the real issue here. Made everyone forget what we should be talking about...
Which is of course, the question; 'why'd ya choose such a gawd awful song!?' ;-)
