I think you must have caught him at a bad time as I know Steve well and he is always a true gentleman, when he is working I know he has a lot on his mind as he normally is running the band but he is a lovely guy.

I met him in the street when he was in Belfast for a clinic, he was out for a pre-gig stroll. He was utterly charming, took the time to let me get a pic, chatted amiably to me for a good ten minutes, AND remembered who I was when we met again after the clinic. Really nice chap.

So far, in the last 6 years at various clinics and events, the list is as follows:
Craig Blundell Thomas Lang Gavin Harrison Jojo Mayer Benny Greb Jason Bittner Marco Minneman Bobby Arechiga Stanton Moore Billy Ward Pete Cater Jason Bowld Nick Mason Eric Delaney Steve White Dom Famularo Martin Ranscombe Terry Bozzio Martin Drew And, top of anyone's list, the legendary Mike Dolbear!
I've spent a decent amount of time with most of them, well, more than just a quick handshake anyway!
Professionals I've also met who should be famous include: James Hester Simon Dring Bob Knight Andy Edwards Brookie
I've also met the legendary Rex Webb regularly, formerly of Premier in the days of Moonie - his grandson ran the Drumcemtre in Northampton. |

| I've met Vinnie Colaiuta, Herman Ernest and Chad Wackerman after gigs. Steve White after a clinic. I got autographs from Peter Erskine and Steve Smith after their shows at the Rhythm Sticks festival in London. A guy came up to me after a gig and said I was really good and then his wife later told me he was the original drummer for Hawkwind (though I can't verify that it was him at all so I guess it doesn't count). Gene Calderazzo borrowed my drum kit for a gig. Met Asaf Sirkis and Matt Skelton at performances when I was at college. Can't think of any others. |

| So I just walked to the front of the stage where Dave Weckl was at the London Drum Show and said something like " so you're still using that snare with the two sets of wires". He said something like " I designed it all those years ago. It's what I use". Then we talked about the Yamaha Phoenix Kit. |

Ian Paice............At a drum clinic, fantastic player, top bloke and a real gent. Cozy Powell..........On a Virgin flight to LA, chatted about drums, recording etc for hours and invited me backstage on the Brian May tour, couldn't make it but what a diamond bloke! Steve Smith..........At drum clinic, I was a bit in awe of such a talent ! Mickey Dee...........At a hotel in LA, signed one of my drum skins and invited me to the Motorhead gig at the Hardrock the following night, tremendous drummer and awesome drum solo! Craig Blundell.......At a drum clinic, very modest chap for such a huge talent and a really nice geezer !
All these top flight musicians have taken time to chat and encourage and it proves to me that the drumming community is unique in it's sense of camraderie ! |

Only Steve White so far for me but what a player and gent. Had close encounters with several others at various clinics/demos as well.
Whilst reading this thread it made me wonder what response you'd get on a guitar forum. Not a great deal, I suspect. Shows what a great bunch our top drummers, and drummers in general, are! |

I've met lots of drummers who are famous. Though not for playing drums. Though I did once come out of a Film premiere (too embarrassing to tell you what) walking 6 foot behind a bloke in a suit surrounded by very tall elegant models and only realised as he got into his limo and I headed for the bus stop it was Mr K. Moon. Funny though there were more flash photos taken as me and the missus walked out. Agh! That means somewhere there's a photo of me coming out of THAT premiere! |
Sitting on top of the mountain isn't the most interesting bit of the climb. Sitting at the bottom aint much fun either. |

Craig Blundell.
He put an offer out on facebook that he had some time available for one to one lessons on a first come first served basis. I sent him a message without expecting a reply as i expected he would be deluged. To my amazement he personally replied to me and offered me a slot. I made sure i could take th time off work and accepted it.
I rolled up on his drive at his house in Surrey after the 3 hour drive from the westcountry to be greeted like a long lost friend, although i had never met the man before. I went on to have a wondoerful 2 hour lesson with him and had the pleasure of getting to know him a bit in that time. I think that what makes a person great in the public eye is their interpersonal skills and he has it by the truckload. He seemed to take a real interest in me which was very endearing. He explained to me his playing background from his time in the Royal Marines along with his playing ethos, the never ending quest for self improvement, such as the time he spent on developing his limb independence. That formed the basis of my lesson with him by his "playing card" exercise i.e. different drums marked on the red cards and alternating "left" and "right" sticks marked on the black cards.
That was my day spent with the great Craig Blundell. A wonderful man indeed.

My first ever in person lesson with a professional drummer. I'm kacking it.
I've never met Ged but have used his gear - we record all our stuff with Mark Jones in Oswaldtwistle. He works and writes with Ged a lot and was in Big Dog with him. I know he's toured with him doing sound for Peter Gabriel amongst other things.
If Ged's anything like Mark he must me a sound bloke - Mark's one of the nicest guys you could meet, despite being a Rovers fan

Mike Portnoy - met him on their Images & Words tour donkey's years ago. Lovely bloke. Lars Ulrich - no comment Nick Menza - colossal enthusiasm for drums, couldn't stop tapping his feet. Chad Smith - barking Bernard Purdie - total gentleman Noel Eccles - top chap, wouldn't stop talking and wouldn't let me pay for any of the drinks Steve Taylor - one of my instructors at MI and phenomenal all-round drummer and exponent of traditional grip technique. Now does his Buddy Rich tribute band which is phenomenal. Steve & Alan White - both utter gentlemen Dom Famularo - don't think I've ever, ever met someone so in to drums like him Greg Bissonette - another top chap who wasn't offended when I offered to cut both his legs off to give the rest of us a chance
These two aren't technically drummers in the accepted sense, but warrant a mention: Bob Zildjian - real larger-than-life character. Don't ever call him 'Mr Zildjian' though. He's 'Mr Sabian'. Vic Firth - another fun character
Very jealous of those of you who've met Stanton Moore.

| Steve Gadd is a regular person with a New York/Italian accent. I showed him a cd compliation of some work he did with Chick Corea and asked him if he remembered any of it. He said yes and then asked me what my name was again. We were looking at the tracks and he autographed the cd. We started to talk about it before the attendants said there were more people who wanted to meet him. We shook hands and I bowed out after a few photos were taken. |

Loads... But a few highlights:-
Dom Famularo, At Clinics, masterclass and a private lesson. What you see is what you get!
Jim Chapin. At the age of 75, he'd driven from Birmingham where he was doing something at a private school to nottingham, to see his friend Dom Famularo do a clinic. He played some stuff in the clinic, and afterwards, He was demonstrating some Moellar stuff on a pad, (This was before Moellar became famous this side of the pond.) It finished up, after the club closed, with maybe a dozen of us, under a streetlamp in the car park. Dom was there, Jim was demonstrating, and I was holding his practice pad while he played. I was knocked out. A straight line from the American Civil war, Via Moellar, Via Chapin to me!
Buddy Rich. Met him very briefly a few times getting the program signed after gigs. Last one in Nottingham just after his second big heart attack, when the doctors had told him he would never, ever, play again. So 6 weeks later he opened in Ronnie Scotts, and 2 weeks after that he was in Nottingham. He played full on for 2 hours, "Sweatin and Bleedin," as they say. Afterwards, Queuing at the stage door for an autograph, it was a hot July night, we were in shorts and Tee shirts. Buddy was sat there in an overcoat, scarf and hat. Obviously really unwell. Just before it was my turn, some guy came up and aid, "Mr Rich, we gotta go now." Buddy said, "No, these people pay my wages, and they pay your wages, if they want an autograph, I stay till they all get a autograph."
Jerry Brown. Saw him play with George Benson at the NEC. Afterwards, trying to get a good look at his kit, asked a roadie if I could get to meet him. Roadie went off, 2 minutes later, called me and the wife through to backstage, It was Jerry's Birthday. The band were there, I got to have some of his Birthday cake! To this day, can't remember what I asked him or what we talked about, just remember having no Idea what to say.
Eric Delaney. Met him several times when I was playing holiday camps. Last time I met him, I recognised him in the audience of a magic show in Blackpool. We chatted, I asked him if he was still playing. "No, I've retired now....well... Glenn Miller Orchestra are over here at the moment, and I'm guesting with them 4 or 5 nights a week. Oh and in a couple of weeks, I'm in the pit at the Covent Garden Opera. The show they're doing has a really weird part, I played it back in the 50's, and they're struggling to find someone to play it now, so I'm going down to help them out." All that at 84 years old. Amazing guy, I cried when I heard he'd gone. More from shock I think than anything. Couldn't believe it, thought he would last for ever.
Andy McGlasson, (No9 in the West End Drummers series on here.) What a great guy, won't go into details, but he did something really WAY above and beyond the call of duty for me.
Peter Ray Biggin. Still got the video of him as the other performer at a Dom Famularo clinic. He was about 12 at the time. ("I've got underwear older than him!"-Dom.)Got to know him more later.
Many many more met briefly at gigs, clinics etc.
Steve White at a clinic. Thanked me afterwards for asking a couple of good questions. (You're welcome Steve. Gimme a shout next time you're coming to Mallorca, I'll take you to some proper Tapas places.)
Dave Weckl. At Ronnie Scotts. As we passed, him looking mean and moody, I complimented him on his playing and the band. He stopped, smiled, face lit up, we chatted for maybe 5 minutes. Polite, friendly, completely different persona to what I expected.
Kenny Clare, Duncan Kinell, Rod Morganstein, ("What size sticks do you use?" ) Clem Cattini, John Hiseman.
Finally, Dino Dukes. Not massively famous, now playing with Paul Carrack. He was the catalyst that started me playing drums.
Bottom line. I can honestly say I've NEVER met a top drummer who wasn't down to earth, approachable and friendly.
Andy

| i've met a few good uns.....russ mckinnon(clinic),nice guy and very tasty player.greg bissonette(clinic),nice guy and very tasty player.gary husband(clinic),extremely nice guy and a tasty player.i passed omar hakim at the same clinic....he seemed tied up and busy so never got the chance to meet him.sometimes you don't,do you?i've seen steve white around 4 times...get him talking about charlton athletic, you'll be there an hour!!lovely bloke and one of my all time top 5 players,so those meetings were an honour.i also got to meet my fave drummer mr.ian paice who again was lovely;i was a little awestruck at this one,so never said much but he was good enough to sign a few bits and bobs...there was a question and answer session during his clinic;such a sparse turn out,too..only around 25 people there.it was at a pearl drum show, late afternoon.others were asking the normal questions...'your favourite track,ian?'....etc etc,and my question was ...'what's richie blackmore REALLY like?'..and the knowing look paicey gave me will stay with me forever!!he turned away(the audience were laughing),he turned back and replied..'young man, what is your vision of hell?'then gave a long and detailed answer which really was revealing.brilliant.i was quite proud, that question to ian actually made it into our local nottingham evening post.i said hello to jon brookes at a steve white clinic...i was stood next to him for ages thinking 'i know your face from somewhere'...embarrassing,really.he's a nice feller.the most amazing meeting for me was ricky lawson;he kind of waltzed down the audience seating isle after a clinic had finished;the place was empty,i was working for a local crewing company, taking down a display for pearl drums.he kind of danced towards me and said 'do you like my new sweatshirt?'or something like that.i was absolutely gobsmacked!!i laughed, shook his hand and he signed a skin for me.what a gentleman!!! |

Nicko McBrain Didn't know her lived 5 doors down from me 20+ years ago. I chatted with him for 10 mins while he was washing his brown Jag by hand, telling me not to tell anyone where he lived.
Roger Taylor Early 90's backstage, told him what a huge influence he was, that I wore out "Live Killers" cassette as a kid.
Dave Weckl in the 80's bumped into him in the street in Soho after an AMAZiNG "electric band" gig at Ronnie Scotts. Had a brief chat - he had a lady on his arm to attend to.
Ricky Lawson early 90's backstage in catering on a third consecutive day .. He told me he had 2 spare tickets for the show, I was like yes please thanks, he said that will be £100 please, oh. |
