Having been in a couple of studios in recent times (within the last year) I've been listening to click tracks a lot. I find the standard click sound to be really really annoying, and worse still, I find that I have to turn it up to where the higher pitched click marking the 'one' gives me earache.
So I started asking the engineers to change the sound from the click to cowbell. I read a theory once that because the cowbell has some complex harmonics (like a cymbal or a bell) in the sound makeup, then you can have it lower in the mix, and still have it audiable.
Whatever the theory, I like it, and it really helps me work out where the click is and I don't have to have it deafening. The only issue is that the engineer guy looks at me like I'm utterly barking crazy (he might have a point) and then mutters and sighs his way round to working out how to get that cowbell sound.
Does anyone else have this issue? Is it just me that does this? |

| When my old 1980s band had a recording contract I had to do most of it to clicks. The Producer and/or Engineer automatically set up a cowbell sound, I think on a Simmons SD 6 sequencer. I can work to clicks, but a cowbell is much nicer, it fits in with the drum part and is like playing along with a really steady percussionist. |
