Just saw the end of the one show and the national youth jazz orchestra played the show out including a nice solo by whoever the current drummer is (that doesn't shave yet). Check it on iplayer later when it's up.

Very impressive. And nice looking kit too. But precocious talent like that should be nipped in the bud.

Oh cool. Is it available online?
Have to applaud any opportunities for this sort of music getting to a wider public.

NYJO (and the Midlands based MYJO) are two of our national treasures! MYJO drummer Dave Tandy is an exceptionally talented drummer who also appeared a few weeks ago on The One Show and is regularly seen playing around the country with Chris Dean's Syd Lawrence Orchestra.
With young musicians like Felix and Dave and all the other gifted players coming up through the ranks of these fine orchestras, the future of jazz and big band music in the UK is in safe hands.
One thing that puzzles me though is this, that when these orchestras play live concerts, why more music teachers don't drag their pupils along to show them what you can achieve if you really dedicate yourself to your craft. So often these bands are playing to predominantly older audiences. When I saw Mr NoChops playing one of his Buddy Rich Tribute shows a year or so ago, I didn't see more than a handful of youngsters there. What a missed opportunity for a young music student to hear the sound of a live big band. (I do feel better for sharing that! )
