Hello all,

I'm trying to help my brother with his Acer Aspire 9300 laptop. The screen is black and a couple of YouTube videos say the 'fix' is fairly simple.
All I need to do is to download the correct Bios from the Acer website, format a flashdrive as FAT and not the default FAT32 - which I've done.

The next step is to run the dos-flash file, I can't find this so have tried the only .EXE file, however, I get an error message of 'Sorry! The Bios file cannot support Wflash' - a few computery forums don't help.

Any ideas?

Go to the Acer website and download the correct BIOS.
Out the BIOS file onto the flash drive. Do not connect it to the computer at the moment (there's no point).
Reboot the machine but go into the BIOS.
Change the boot sequence to include USB and/or flash drives before the hard disk drive.
Save the new settings and exit the BIOS. Allow the machine to boot into the OS.
Shut down the machine.
Insert the flash drive into a USB port and power up the machine.
It should boot to the stick and the new BIOS will load.
Follow whatever on screen instructions are given.
DO NOT ALLOW THE POWER TO BE REMOVED OR OTHERWISE INTERRUPTED DURING THE UPDATE PROCESS OR THE MACHINE WILL DIE. *PERMANENTLY*.

BIOS updates can be easy and I hope this one is. But they can also go expensively wrong.

Thanks Dave, I'm using my laptop with a new 4GB flash drive, never gone into my own Bios as I need the Acer Bios for the other laptop - don't think I'm confident to mess around with my own computery things.

Is there any chance anyone can simply upload what I need so I can download to the flashdrive. I have the zip file from the Acer website but cannot open the file needed.

Your laptop has nothing to do with this at all.
You said you already have the flash drive formatted correctly with the BIOS file on it.
Follow my instructions above from the third line. The machine I am referring to is the machine that needs the BIOS update.
For f*ck's sake DO NOT TRY AND UPDATE _YOUR_ LAPTOP WITH A BIOS BELONGING TO A DIFFERENT MACHINE.

If the screen is screwed on the Acer laptop then you're screwed and cannot do anything as you need to be able to see what you're doing.
Unless the Acer laptop has an external monitor output, which it should have.
Plug that in and boot the machine.
With any luck it'll come up OK and you can download the update and perform the work on the Acer.

Do not do any of the above on your laptop. If you do you'll screw that too.
If this is too complex or beyond your abilities then leave it well alone and get someone who knows that they're doing to fix it.
Even if it means taking it to a local repair place.
In my view you are not computer savvy enough to be performing BIOS updates so I suggest you leave it alone. No offence.
Your brother will have to seek a solution elsewhere unfortunately.
