I have a pair of 14" hi-hats and a 20" ride that I want to shift on E-bay, but how do I pack them to avoid damage in transit? The 14" hats shouldn't be too much of a problem (box + plenty of bubble wrap) but what do I do about a large-ish heavy-ish ride? It has a soft case that I will sell with it, but that wouldnt provide much protection. I don't want to be the next person trying to sell an inverted cymbal (there seem to be a few at the moment!)

A length of that foam water pipe insulation around the edge of the cymbal is good too!

Thanks for that. Where might I find a box measuring, say 22" x 4"? The price of posting seems to be a combination of weight and sixe.

A simple solution, go and treat yourself to a new cymbal, then use the box from the new cymbal.

Bewdy - if only it was that simple! I have recently bought a new kit, the deal beaing (with She That Must Be Obeyed) that I clear out a load of my old gear which is, apparently, "cluttering the place up"! Amazing what you can find in a loft when you put your mind to it!

If you can't find box of the right dimensions, find some very large pieces of cardboard of the wrong dimensions and make your own. I've done it plnty of times before and never had any problems. Just don't forget the bubblewrap!

I use a similar idea with air hose from the factories I work in.
Another one I do is to get 4 pieces of cardboard about 200mm square (cut from old boxes), fold it over a couple of times until it's an oblong.
After an initial layer of bubble-wrap I stick the cardboard onto the cymbal edges so they are kinda north, east, south and west, it turns the cymbal into a more square shape which is easier to work with. I then wrap further with bubble-wrap and put in a box or make a box for it.
The edges are completely protected and I've never had any comebacks with shipping.

^ +1 for the squareafying technique. That is exactly how I have posted cymbals before with zero damage.

And stating the obvious here, you must use a delivery service that can be tracked/PODed

an old head, the cymbals fit perfectly, whilst protecting the edges... then wrap in cardboard

Won't help you with the big ride, but pizza delivery boxes are great for posting smaller cymbals.
