We've been toying with the idea of playing an instrumental. The criteria is it must be recognisable, danceable and not include a full horn section. We are 2 guitars, bass, keys and drums. The best suggestion at the moment is Green Onions which I detest but will play if outvoted. The band tend to lean more in the direction of rock but I'm thinking more along the funk route...as is Mr Bass. Maybe something from The Meters (not that we'd do it justice)
Anyway, any suggestions would be appreciated.

| Time is Tight usually goes down well. If the banjoist is up to it, try Santana's Europa. Love playing that one -- you have to be a kit drummer + two percussionists rolled into one. |

We do this in "Fungus Licks". Though not a straight cover (ours has a boogie shuffle middle section) I do try to stick to the vibe of the original's drumming, if not a verbatim copy. It is a lot of fun and the track name is actually "Chicken Man" |

Hm. If you listen to it it sounds like a guide for a guitar solo. My guess is that it wasn't intended that way. Mind you I didn't see them before it was released to see if it was already part of the stage set so I could be very wrong but it sounds like it would still sound good played on a guitar. You could let the audience sing it. |
Sitting on top of the mountain isn't the most interesting bit of the climb. Sitting at the bottom aint much fun either. |

I take it you didn't look at the title of the clip to see who actually did the tune.
It was Focus, not Santana. Dutch prog-rock band.

Thank you Stephen, that is what I was aiming at. Santana/Focus, easy to get the two confused,
Lead banjoist in the first band I ever played in was a big Focus fan and Jan Akkerman in particular and used to played me their records a million times. God knows how Thijs Van Leer made it to those top notes, a choir boy with his nuts in a vice would struggle to reach them.
Check out this well fast live version of Hocus Pocus, worth it for the facial expressions from Thijs alone! http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=g4ouPGGLI6Q&feature=related |

Excellent suggestion! And here's the original version:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gqg3l3r_DRI
Dave, get yourself down here and I'll give some timpani and orchestral percussion lessons so you can do it!
What a great tune. Love that.
Captn, I started off as a Tympanist at the Dublin College of Music. Became 2nd Tympanist for the Irish Youth Orchestra. My most favouritist percussion instrument.
That said, I could always do with more lessons. |
