| Not since I bought a DAW 4 years ago, but still have two old open reel decks and a Portastudio. |

Well I thought I would do a little tracking direct to tape ( again ) and just play around to see if the 'compressed' tape saturation sound works for me on certain things. However, as far as I can figure, I could just run my existing DAW tracks to tape, and then back in to the DAW, would this not give the the same results, I am limited to 4 tape recording tracks ( Tascam 22-4 ) and 15 ips, just curious for tips and tricks. I have demo'd the Steinberg 'open deck' software recently, and I have to say I found it really inspiring, it seemed to ad a very pleasing distortion/warmth and 'glued' things together nicely, if you know what I mean. Init. |

| Transferring it from daw to tape and back wont give it exactly the same thing but it will give you some of the vibe. experiment with different mixes going to tape, you'll find it acts better on some things being louder than others (great on kick and toms but much more difficult to get a great snare). Hopefully I'l soon be able to share a project with you that I did earlier this year with some fantastic drum sounds. All a bit hush hush at the moment though... |

Trev' thanks for your input, interesting comment regarding Snare sound, perhaps due to the high content of white noise and top end which is an important part of the Snare sound, Digital 'accuracy' is advantageous. I am not after 'polite' drums, I want dirt, ( good ) distortion and attitude for this project, once again ta, any other killer tips ?????
Oh by the way your views on software tape emulations ?? |
