During my time on this planet I have worked with and witnessed some amazing male singers.
My absolute favourite has always been the voice of Paul Rodgers for his superb ad-libs and phrasing with Andrew Roachford as second in line and with Eddie Vedder in that vocal range too as sub.
I am currently with Roachford after waiting possibly 20+ years and can never tire of listening to him...
Do I need to knock Rodgers off his perch as Andrew has touches of Otis Redding?

Has to be a male singer?
If sow, well I don't think I have ever heard anyone who I would say was better than Marvin Gaye. Couple others high up on the list would be Daryl Hall and John Martin. |

Daryl Hall, his delivery is spot on. If you've not seen it before check out Daryls House on Youtube.
George Michael, his unplugged version of Praying For Time is about as good as singing gets.
As for the ladies.....nobody beats Aretha Franklin and Chaka Khan. |

Paul Rodgers was great to work with and listen to
Chrissie Hynde was also awesome, better than Joan Baez head to head |

Maybe not so much now, but certainly in his prime, Robert Plant.
I've always rated Chris Cornell too - I think he has a great set of pipes.
I was once lucky enough to be at an event where James Morrison got up and sang with the house band; he rattled through a few (diverse) covers for around half an hour and was captivating. His vocal talent is obvious but Yards' question was concerning 'class' - for me, James oozed class.. |

| Rock-wise Chris Cornell too, I was on holiday in Prague a couple of years ago and looking for stuff to do saw that he was playing, a tiny venue too. Anyway in summary it was bloody excellent. |

Not too taken with Sade, but Matt Monroe, now your talking. Oozes quality in every word of every song. People often ask me why i don't sing any Matt monroe songs, easy answer is there are just some singers you can't do justice too so i stay well clear, regardless of hitting the notes and getting the phrasing right, you just can't.
We had something similar before, and my answer was Daniel Bedingfield (live), but as Mully says i could write for ages about singers. In todays musical environment the quality is scattered few and far between. Nearly always the 60's,70's,80's singers are mentioned, but once you get into the 90's+ it's hard to think of more than a handful. I think every singer mentioned up to now could put up a brilliant argument for being on the list.

I have a soft spot for Sade as we have a family history going back to the early 70's and she's lovely,so the voice is secondary! It will be in my book if I don't croak before then?
Matt Monroe reminds me of my Mum each time I hear him.
I forgot about Daniel Bedingfield.I toured with him and have never heard him hit a bum note.Powerful vocals too. |

Matt Monroe was class. George Martin working his magic behind the scenes helped, but he had a superb delivery. Deeply unfashionable with my generation, but you cant deny a great voice, regardless of the genre. Sade's Lovers Rock is a great album. I'd say she had a touch of class. |

It's gotta be Annie Lennox for me.
I have this theory about singers which I'll TRY (!) to put across in writing.
People often say "oh I wish I could sing"....."I wish I could sing like Robbie Williams"......."I'd love to be like Beyonce"...."I want to be the next such-and-such". And to me, actually they don't want to be able to SING like these people - they want to be able to PERFORM like these people. They want to be able to strut around Knebworth like Robbie Williams, or headline both sides of the Atlantic like Beyonce. They want the ability to perform, to show off, to be adulated all because of a good (not great!) voice. And I think we can all be guilty of thinking that, myself included.
But then....then there are people that GENUINELY just make you wish you could SING! Not perform, not show off, not dance, not necessarily showcase yourself to 50,000 people at one gig. Just to be able to SING. And Annie Lennox is the perfect example for me. If I could stand, open my mouth, and make a noise like that.....jeez, I would just be one happy man. That voice doesn't need any thrills or to be accompanied by any dancing or backing. It just needs that voice...and that's it! |

Someone I personally rate is MSP's James Dean Bradfield - I love his voice. He's pretty handy with the banjo too
