Gabor Dornyei & Kornél Horváth @ Drumtech (London)

Hungarian drum and percussion duo Gabor Dornyei (drums) and Kornél Horváth (percussion) may be unfamiliar names on the drummer circuit at this point but their debut performance at Drumtech (London) was a sensational demonstration of drums and percussion, captivating an enthused audience.

With no backing track and accompanied purely by melodic percussion and ethnic rhythms, they displayed the relationship between the great use of rich percussive tones and drumming styles tightly weaving odd time signatures with constructive use of note displacements; the interplay had this audience mesmerised and jumping out of their seats.

Gabor Dornyei has nurtured his talent and experience winning the accolades ‘Drummer of the Year’ and ‘Golden Drumstick’ awards in Hungary, studio recordings on more than 30 CD’s including numerous sessions for Walt Disney and theatre residencies in London’s West End including ‘Les Miserables’, ‘Fame’, ‘Sister Act’ and touring with Michael Jackson’s ‘Thriller’.

Kornél Horváth is a celebrated and respected musician strongly rooted in the traditions of his homeland. His deep understanding of percussion spans many genres stretching from Latin American, East Indian, Arabic and African and has worked on projects with jazz fusion guitarist Al DiMeola.

His unique hand techniques have to be witnessed to fully appreciate the precision, speed and musicality in performance.

Particular highlights were Kornél giving a superb demonstration of the Swiss Hang drum which is best described as a metal hand drum. It emits sounds ranging from harps and bells to harmonically tuned steelpans.

Stylistically, Gabor draws from many drumming influences from Horacio ‘El Negro’ Hernandez, Dave Weckl and Vinnie Coliauta to deliver his brand of  jazz, pop, rock, and Latin and is slowly gaining recognition as a drummer to be reckoned with.

Together this exciting duo had a vibrant intensity producing a fire and energy that connected with this young audience. They’re organic approach showcased their rhythmic excellence – a recommended ‘must see’ and a worthy experience.

"All the students who attended the master class were thoroughly enthralled by Gabor and Kornel. The level of musicianship that they displayed was outstanding. It''s great to see such an entertaining and educational clinic by two amazing players" - Darren Suckling, Sales & Marketing Supervisor, Drumtech
