The inaugural competition kicked off in October 2002 when a story was posted on the http://mikedolbear.com/ website, inviting young drummers from around the UK to enter the first annual Young Drummer of the Year competition. The competition was put together to give the country’s young drumming talent a national and indeed international platform, which we hope will be the first steps in their musical career.
Since then, the event has seen tremendous growth. It has established itself as an internationally recognised event, attracting an ever increasing number of entries and seeing the very best in terms of drumming talent. Sponsorship from various high profile companies has meant that the competition has continued to improve, both in terms of popularity and scale of production.
This years sponsors are Gretsch drums, Zildjian cymbals, Vic Firth drum sticks, Gewa bags and cases and Gibraltar hardware.
Meet The Sponsors:
“We are incredibly excited to have the opportunity to hear and see the UK’s best young drummers playing Gretsch Drums.
It couldn’t be better; seeing someone at the start of their career on a drum set that is played by drummer legends, all in the setting of such a highly regarded competition“

“Zildjian and Vic Firth are proud to be associated with the UK Young Drummer of the Year contest. Our company is rooted in supporting drummers throughout their musical journey and it is an honor to work with Mike Dolbear and the immensely talented drummers that compete in this contest year in and year out. Helping a drummer find their sound is at the heart of what we do everyday, and we can’t wait to meet all the drummers who will be participating this year. “
