Van Kleef Aluminium 13×7” Snare Drum

Ok, so earlier this year I took a look at the VK Thomas Lang signature snare drum, which you can read about here if you missed it. That drum was 14×7 and made from titanium. This next drum is a 13×7 aluminium shell.

In terms of hardware and features, the two drums are fairly similar; this drum has the same thin shell, cool lugs, hoops and strainer set up but doesn’t have the more elaborate etching and cut outs.

Whilst I’m not really going to compare this drum and the previous one, I did find this one to have a tighter overall playing response and feel to it. Perhaps ‘crispier’ is the better word.

In terms of the sound, I found the drum sat best for me at the more middle/moderate tension which is where it is in the video. I did try it higher and lower than this, but this is where is played best for me.

Overall, I guess I’d say great stuff again. I do like the design of these drums, the hardware and the very clean look they have; everything looks like it’s there with purpose. Whilst the drum is quite light in weight, it still all feels quite solid both to play and as an overall package.

However, what’s maybe even better is that Van Kleef drums are appearing in more and more shops so you can check them out for yourself.
