Hi, I’m Danny Pearson and welcome to my next lesson in a series for the Mike Dolbear affiliated drum school. One of the most common questions I get asked is ‘how do I come up with better fill-ins’ or ‘more fill-in ideas’. So in this series I will be showing you the sort of fills that I show my students and that I use myself. This month I”m going to show you a nice 2 beat fill-in using groups of 6 or sextuplets. In the first group of 6 I”ll be using the 6-stroke roll sticking, which is RLLRRL. The first right hand note is played on the hi-tom with the rest of the notes on the snare. The second group of 6 will be single sticking but the 4th note will be a bass drum instead of a left hand-RLRKRL. The first 2 notes are on the snare & hi-tom with the rest of the hand notes played on the floor tom. The fill-in will take up 2 beats so I”ll be starting it on beat 3 of the bar. I”ll be playing the groove on Beats 1 & 2. The sticking for this is – (reverse sticking if you’re left handed): 3 & 4 & RLLRRL RLRKRL K=Kick or Bass drum Ok, if you watch the attached video you will see I”ve played the fill-in slowly on its own & then up to speed with a groove. Have a go at following my examples and then try and come up with some of your own! If you have any questions you can email me at danny@dannypearsondrums.co.uk. Have fun! Danny |
